Free or Cheap Volunteer Work in South Africa

We will be adding a lot more low cost volunteer projects here soon but South Africa is one of those places where it is sometimes worth splashing the cash to do something out of the ordinary working to conserve the nation's spectacular wildlife.

Grassroots Volunteering in South Africa

The organisations listed below have either got in touch with us to add their details to this or another of our websites, or we otherwise have reason to believe they are actively looking for international volunteers and charge reasonable or no fees to join in, live and work with them:

Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife

www.crowkzn.co.za

A wildlife hospital that cares for up to 400 injured and orphaned wild animals and birds in Kwazulu Natal. Feeding and caring for so many animals on a daily basis is no small task, which is why CROW welcomes the skills, experience and enthusiasm of both local and international volunteers at its centre. CROW is considered to be one of the leading rehabilitation centres in South Africa. They also have a three to six month internship programme primarily open to graduates and post-graduates (but everyone is welcome) for young people to gain skills and experience in marketing, fundraising, public relations and communications.

Where: Kwazulu Natal.
Accommodation & Costs: The cost of participating in the volunteer programme is around £15 per day, covering three basic meals and accommodation in a volunteer house. Prices drop a little the longer you stay.

Other Opportunities to Volunteer in South Africa

Intern Africa is a mediation agency for internships and volunteering founded by two enthusiastic Dutchmen. Several volunteering projects are available, including working in a women's shelter, an orphanage, disability centre, or working with animals. Costs depend on the project but range from around £45 to £450, some with accommodation,, some without. Internships in several fields are also offered, including a theatre internship, architecture, and working the reception for a game lodge. Prices for internships are more expensive, starting with a €420 mediation fee, €45 per month, and accommodation for €250 to €450 per month.

There used to be an application form for volunteers on the website of The Cape Town & Winelands International Film Festival, highlighting both the professional and the emerging filmmaker, but it appears to not be there at the moment. Perhaps we arrived on their site too far in advance of this year's festival. It's usually held in March but appears to be held in August and September this year.
