Free or Cheap Volunteer Work in Indonesia

Grassroots Volunteering in Indonesia

The organisations listed below have either got in touch with us to add their details to this or another of our websites, or we otherwise have reason to believe they are actively looking for international volunteers and charge reasonable or no fees to join in, live and work with them:

Bukit Lawang Trust

www.bukitlawangtrust.org

Bukit Lawang Trust is an education based community project founded in 2003 in North Sumatra. They focus on conservation education training and also offer a free kindergarten for the local community, free daily English classes, green classes, workshops on business, rubbish pick ups, jungle field trips for the children, free yoga, aerobics, sports and other classes on their roof. Volunteers are welcome for two months to teach or assist the teachers, or work on the eco farm. Applications should be made though Volunteer World. During Ramadan they do refurbishment work and advertise for a plumber in the jungle or an electrician to help about the place. Longer term roles, such as in media, recruitment and marketing, that come with free accommodation and a food allowance are also sometimes advertised on their website.

Where: Bukit Lawang.
Accommodation & Costs: £87 a week goes towards meals and dorm accommodation. Volunteers on the eco farm stay in the home of BLT’s project partner.

Bali Animal Welfare Association

www.bawabali.com

BAWA is a non profit organisation working to save, protect and improve the lives of all animals in Bali and beyond. BAWA directly relieves the suffering of animals by providing emergency response and rescue, food and medication, rehabilitation and adoption. Funded entirely by donations they rely heavily on a staff of dedicated volunteers. While they sometimes invite volunteers to assist with programmes such as street feeding, and welcome those with specialist skills such as graphic design, photography and film making, writing, social media projects, IT, event management and administration, mostly they need veterinary professionals to work alongside Indonesian vets as advisers and consultants.

Where: Bali.
Accommodation & Costs: Volunteers should be self funding but there is no fee to volunteer.

Other Opportunities to Volunteer in Indonesia

Hey, do you want to spam our website every few days with dozens of adverts we've told you several times are unwelcome? Do you want your volunteer experience to consist entirely, so it seems to us, of sitting at a computer posting adverts for more volunteers to come and sit at a computer which we will just ignore? Do you want to contribute to orphanage tourism? Then International Humanity Foundation (IHF) have just the programme for you.

SLV.Global is a mental health volunteering organisation operating in Bali, providing psychology students and graduates from around the world the opportunity to gain valuable, practical experience in the mental health sector whilst being immersed in a unique and exciting culture. While these placements do not fulfil our cheap volunteering criterea, SLV.Global cover living expenses and flights of volunteer supervisors. They also recruit volunteer peer mentor and coordinators who are reimbursed some of their total placement fees upon successful completion of the role. SLV also provide short term internships in Java, Sri Lanka and India but we not consider these to be inexpensive.
