Free or Cheap Volunteer Work in Indonesia

Grassroots Volunteering in Indonesia

The organisations listed below have either got in touch with us to add their details to this or another of our websites, or we otherwise have reason to believe they are actively looking for international volunteers and charge reasonable or no fees to join in, live and work with them:

I Am From Here

www.gudangmyart.blogspot.com

This new project is located in the jungle and seeks to educate young people in language, art and environmental awareness. They are presently building the first of several tree houses, made of recycled materials and donated nails, to serve as a school, studio and eventually art gallery. Classes have already started and they welcome foreign volunteers to help teach English and get involved in planting, building and art activities.

Organic farming and creative recycling of cigarette butts, sandals, shoes and plastic into sculptures and housing are amongst their other activities and they also hope to teach traditional cooking techniques to their volunteers here, and there will be plenty of opportunities for camping, fishing, and swimming in the river.

Where: South Sulawesi.
Accommodation & Costs: Accommodation and food is included, and a weekly donation of $15 is appreciated. Edy, the coordinator, collects flags and would be pleased if you could bring a flag of the country you come from. Sketchbooks, pens and pencils are also needed.

International Humanity Foundation (IHF)

www.ihfonline.org

IHF volunteers seem to spend a little too much time sending the same adverts for more volunteers to our Jobs Abroad Bulletin than we care for, but they also help in their orphanage and education centre. In addition, volunteer positions are available for co-directors at the different centres to help the director with the running of the place. Outside of Indonesia, they have a centre in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Where: Banda Aceh, Jakarta, Medan and Bali.
Accommodation & Costs: Prices range from $150/week for voluntourists who teach four hours a day and stay for less than one month to free for co-directors who must commit to a minimum of six months. Volunteers live in-center with all meals provided.
